Five times. And meanwhile, we continue to talk about interior design as if it were just about cushions, color palettes, and that gorgeous chair you saw in a magazine. We have a perception problem. And to understand it, we need to go back a couple of centuries.

When did architecture save lives?

In the mid-19th century, Paris and New York were, quite literally, sick. Cholera and tuberculosis weren't metaphors: they were wiping out entire neighborhoods. And then something happened that we now take for granted: the city was redesigned to heal.
In Paris, under Napoleon III, Baron Haussmann demolished the medieval layout. He did not do so to make the city more harmonious (that beauty we now associate with grand boulevards is, in reality, a consequence, not an objective).

The order was to ensure air circulation, as stagnant air was believed to be deadly. In New York, the Tenement Act of 1901 mandated that every room have a window to the outside. Suddenly, natural light and ventilation became public health tools.

During those years, medical science dictated architecture. The city learned to breathe.

The great paradox

Here's where it gets interesting. We managed to make the streets clean, to keep wastewater separate from drinking water, and to ensure the buildings had electricity. And then, we forgot about the interior.

For decades, we've treated interior design as mere decoration. As if, once urban infrastructure is guaranteed, what happens inside your home is neutral, harmless, a blank canvas without biological consequences.

And the data is screaming the opposite. The air in your living room, laden with volatile organic compounds (the infamous VOCs emitted by furniture, paints, and plastics), can be up to five times more toxic than the air outside. Poorly calibrated artificial lighting disrupts your biological clock.

The acoustics in your office leave you exhausted at the end of the day without you knowing why. The color of your bedroom ceiling influences your cortisol levels.
And all of this is backed by evidence. It's not intuition. It's measurable science.

The second health revolution

We are witnessing something similar to what happened in the 19th century, but this time it's happening indoors. And it's no longer just about preventing infectious diseases. It's about understanding how your nervous system works when you enter a space, and designing accordingly. This new wave rests on three pillars that, for us, are our daily compass:

1. Neuroarchitecture: space speaks to your brain

The design of a space alters your brain chemistry. Ceiling height, the geometry of a repeating pattern, the level of ambient noise: all of these directly influence your levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.

That's why, when we choose a color, we don't do it because it's fashionable. We do it because we know how your nervous system responds to that specific wavelength.

2. Biophilic design: they are not plants, it's biology

Edward O. Wilson called it biophilia: the innate affinity humans have for nature. It's not poetic; it's measurable. Clinical studies show that exposure to natural elements reduces blood pressure and accelerates recovery.

3. Healthy materiality: what you touch, inhabits you

Here is one of the quietest revolutions. Leaving behind toxic plastics, returning to lime, technical clays, and certified woods. Materials that regulate the

If in the 19th century the public health hero was the engineer who designed the sewer system, today the protagonist is the one who understands that a space can heal or exhaust. That every design decision is a decision about your body.

Interior design can no longer afford to be superficial. That's the difference between a merely harmonious space and an environment that promotes longevity. We've gone from cleaning up the streets to cleaning up our bedrooms. And data, clinical trials, and biology are, today, the most valuable tools in any design studio.
